The phrase “We are living in unprecedented times” seems to be the best way to describe the last decade-plus. However, I’m sure the American Colonists felt the same way when they decided to write the Declaration of Independence.
That was 250 years ago.
History is constantly repeating itself, and this is one of those times.
As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, we need not just look back at history but also look forward and ask ourselves what the 300th or 500th anniversary should look like. What principles would guide a Constitution written today? Issues such as economic fairness, healthcare, governance, and individual liberties remain part of the conversation, just as representation and self-rule did 250 years ago. So, if the Constitution were written today, what would you include?
